Some Information Regarding Psychoanalysis And Therapy

By Barry Nichols

Psychoanalysis is the brainchild of Sigmund Freud who devised it over a century ago in Germany. Since this time there have been a host of other theorists who have added to it and now it is a central part of our culture.

Freud believed that you could find a way of addressing a number of issues that people faced by finding a way into the unconscious. This is something which is done by a patient meeting with a therapist whereupon a therapist asks several questions and they draw information from this that helps them to draw their conclusions.

Once this is done it is possible to really understand the true motivations of a person which may differ enormously from what they believe is the truth. One central concept which is of prime importance in this regard is the concept of repression which involves your mind avoiding certain memories.

When we are having problems then it is common for us to hide away from our fears. Things we have dealt with are often far too tough for us to face. We identify certain things and make sure they get locked away. They still remain with us internally and when we don't deal with them they affect us emotionally and this has many effects.

When we don't really come to terms with the things that are causing us problems then we can be led into destructive behaviour. This can manifest itself in addictions to alcohol or drugs. If not then we may respond by having weight problems or have sleep disturbances. You will find that once you come to terms with what is going on in your mind these can be dealt with effectively.

The main focus of Psychoanalysis is to allow us to address the things that trouble us the most. Once we are able to do this it means we can live lives that are rewarding and have valuable interpersonal relationships.
